PHILIP GERSTEIN:  ¡EXPERIMENT!

April 1-26, 2015
 Reception:   Sunday, April 19, 2-4pm

Philip Gerstein, "Libertad Y Alegria", Mixed Media, 36"X48", 2014

"Being There",  30" x 24",   oil stick, acrylic, pigment & mixed media on wood panel

Many artists work in more than one distinct style.  Rarely, however, the artworks of that "other" style make it into the same one-person show.  This exhibition would break that mold.

My paintings in this exhibition have this in common: ...the spirit of discovery, the use of color, a range
of materials and a considerable variety of textures, scales, orientations...to remake the world anew, to paint it fresh, to discover something I have not seen before...and to commune with some of the best, most alive modern and contemporary art.

Each painting, then, is a possible world, a one-time experiment that sings its own song,
that
looks
for its own joy within the
universal pursuit of happiness, the universal attempt to avoid pain...

 ¡Experiment!

"Art is about not knowing where we're going" (Wolfgang Laib, German conceptual artist)
...all we really know is where we came from...

The private* students of the world renowned Tali Roth perform all solo classical guitar pieces in the salon style atomspheric setting of the 5C Cafe. Come early to stake out your seat(s) and to order your refreshments.

The compositions performed throughout this concert range from periods as long as hundreds of years ago, to the 1930's or so -- of composers from Brazil, Spain, Mexico, and more, borrowing from those musical traditions in their writings. The performances will be completely unamplified -- only possible in such an intimate acoustical space. Something special.

In Shosh's words:

THE WARPER PARTY ROCKS!!!!! Eliza B and I had a f****ing BLAST a coupla weeks ago -- performing, hanging, chilling, dancing, partying, just soaking in all that vitality! Yo!!! I mean, like The Warper Party is seriously the quintessential "New York's Best Kept Secret." Check it out --- the edgiest, newest, hottest, most experimental, daring and hip electronic music that you can find in the Entire City -- no joke. And, a smart, groovy laid back crowd, mixed, chill, unpretentious, happening. Located smack in the very hippest hood in NYC today - Williamsburg, just one block from Bedford on N. 8th St. In one evening, from 8pm -- 2am, you get between over 15 to over 18 or more eclectic electronic musicians all showing their stuff, with varying shows and grooves going on simultaneously in two rooms. At one point, I was in the back room, mesmerized by "exclusive Or." They were so abstract. They were amazing. The one guy was pulling and punching those brightly colored cables like a psychedelic old-fashioned telephone switchboard, but each time it would change a sound in the music. It was something he'd rigged up. Visually, it was quite a show. He was improvising with his partner who was picking up and putting down an assortment of little metal boxes and twirling and tweaking knobs with a meaningful gleam in his eye. The music was amazing -- definitely nothing anyone had ever heard before. I kept straining my eyes towards the door looking for Eliza, figuring she'd come looking for me eventually, and wanting to discuss this fantastic aural and visual display with her. Eventually, I laughed and realized that she was not going to come through that door because she was undoubtedly stuck in the other room, just as unable to leave as I was, thoroughly enjoying some other new music, likely something completely different. And indeed she was -- some fabulously hot house music! I even got a twirl on the floor with her - ha ha! The Warper Party is really two different parties at once -- and we just enjoyed both levels in one night -- A) The Best Most Fun and Interesting dance & art music party in town, AND, B) a community of electronic musicians coming together every month to share new discoveries. And what a stellar community it is! One might expect nasty competitiveness, but not at Warper. No, this is a community of open-mindedness and mutual respect, almost idyllic really. Was an honor and delight to perform sandwiched between Moldovar and DJ Shaky, both esteemed! The venue even has an outdoor chill-out garden with picnic table seating in the moonlight.

Video projections by AbopTV. Dance movement & poetry. Followed by an open Midnight Jam led by the legendary Roy Campbell. A Vision Festival / RUCMA Series event.

The Vision Festival is sponsored by Arts For Art, which is a multi-cultural, artist-initiated organization whose purpose is to build awareness and understanding of avantjazz and related expressive movements while encouraging a sense of community amongst artists and their audiences. Our principal activities are the presentation of innovative, creative music, dance, multi-media performances, spoken word, and the exhibition of visual arts. Rise Up Creative Music and Arts (RUCMA) is a new creative music organization founded in 2007. RUCMA is built around a grassroots coalition of musicians and music lovers who have united to address a variety of creative, political and practical concerns relating to New York's artistic culture. Most essential in this regard is a coordinated effort among both organizations to build an innovative new center for creative music and arts in lower Manhattan. For 12 years, The Vision Festival was limited to one huge exciting annual weekend festival of concerts. Shoshke-Rayzl is extremely proud to perform in the new Vision Festival/ RUCMA Series, started in 2008.

N.B. Shosh's mentor from Bennington College and lifelong friend, the great world-influential master innovator, Bill Dixon, received a lifetime achievement award Summer of 2007 at The Vision Festival, where he staged a premiere performance with The Sound Vision Orchestra of a new original composition. This performance can be seen on the internet by webcast worldwide & on TV in NYC Wednesday night, May 14th, 2008 at midnight - in Manhattan on Time Warner cable channel 57, RCN cable channel 84 and worldwide on the web at www.MNN.org (on lower left of home page, select channel 57 under 'Watch MNN Live').  [ Click here for new Online Viewing Help Notes! Recommended to try it out in advance, ’cause it probably starts on time!] The concert is a near one hour length composition -- a world premiere -- composed especially for this event.  The orchestra includes many great improvising musicians -- such as Warren Smith, Jackson Krall, Glynis Lomon, Graham Haynes, Steve Swell, Karen Borca, Joe Daley, Dick Griffin, J.D. Parran, Steve Haynes, Taylor Ho Bynum and many more.  'Transcendent' is just one of many adjectives that can describe the concert -- one that all modern music enthusiasts should want to see.  For more information, please contact somerealmusic@earthlink.net or http://www.bill-dixon.com

BTW, the new Lower East Side is chock full of interesting cafes, galleries, etc. Very lively! You may wish to come to the area Saturday evening several hours early, have dinner, explore, make an entire evening out of it... Please come to the live multimedia art music experience on May 17th. We really want to show our support to The Vision Festival / RUCMA - providing performance venues for creative music in The City!

SHOSHKE GOES CLASSICAL!

>> Video Coming Soon! <<

April 6, 2008 --

Dillon’s
254 W. 54th St.
NYC

SHOSHKE GOES CLASSICAL! This only happens 'bout once a year folks (with occasional sneaks in between), so check it out! This year, it’s the Trio (all guitars, of course) with Zehra Aydin and Jamie Bennett. Directed by the world renowned Tali Roth.

"L'Encouragement" by Fernando Sor, quintessential 18th/19th century Spanish classical guitar composer. This piece's numerous sections each evoke completely different moods. It's amazing how a composition written hundreds of years ago, transmitted through mere written notation, can so effectively communicate so much feeling from such a vastly different time and place.

"Maple Leaf Rag," by Scott Joplin, early 2oth century American Black composer, known for virtually defining the Ragtime genre. Usually played on the piano, arranged here for classical guitars, but true to the composer's sound, before the jazz era borrowed from Ragtime, with its original pre-jazz syncopation.

Shoshke-Rayzl sat in with Benoir and Antonio Dangerfield March, 2006 at Ginger, the new organic Chinese retaurant in Harlem (116th St. & 5th Av - SW corner), at their Sunday Jazz Brunch.  Call Ginger at 212-423-1111 to find out when Benoir and Antonio are playing, and you might occasionally catch Shosh. The MuShu Omelette is out of this world!

Sat., July 16, 2005 -- Duo Noir, Southwest Cafe -- Ridgefield, CT -- This was an unusual show for me -- not the sort of music I usually play these days -- softer, mostly acoustic, going back to my classical guitar training -- my other musical love. I was touched that Benoir invited me to perform with him as part of his "Duo Noir" show.

The venue is a sweet little cafe in Ridgefield, CT -- a nice place to have a super delicious meal in the cuisine of New Mexico. You can bring your family or come alone. It's like a mini-vacation to get away from the City. Directions are on their website, below; or you can give them a call:

I hope you are keeping your heads cool in this heat, whew! Saturday night was a lot of fun for me as I premiered my latest DUO NOIR partner in justice - Shoshke-Rayzl. Her acoustic nylon string guitar, and electric lead guitar playing both enhanced my show at the Southwest Cafe, up in Ridgefield, CT. Special thanks to her for spending hours preparing the music with me. Special props to my man Nando from Jamaica who shared his beautiful voice to the mix. He and I are currently working together on an R & B record of sorts.

Tue., Feb 1, 2005 -- The  new version of the Noirkestra returned to Joe's Pub, NYC for another late evening show. This version of Noirkestra is geared towards dance electronica music, but with a twinge of  psychedelic sounds and strong dub groove elements. The event was part of a CD release party for a unique singer, song-write and performer, Anthony Mills.

The current flavor of Noirkestra contains some members from before and some different members, all of whom did play at our own CD release party at Joe's last August.

Benoir -- bass
Dan Covan -- hand sonic (electronic midi sounds)
Lee Farber -- drums
Jodan -- keyboard
Shoshke-Rayzl -- electric guitar

It was a fun evening, with fabulous DJ dance and lounge vibes and additional live music. "The Eclectic Ride"  is a weekly music event; but the theme for Feb 1st was to celebrate the release of the newest CD, "Cry" by   Anthony Mills. He  performed with his own band, Ghettotrance, later in the show.

JOHN MADERA BIRTHDAY BASH

CLUB SEHO (downstairs - ask for this event)
113 LUDLOW ST. (btwn Delancey & Rivington)
http://www.lickwed.com

Featuring John Madera, Benoir, Michael Lawson, Abou Diarrisouba, Sylvia Mincewicz, Shoshke-Rayzl, Karel Ruzika, Lee Farber, JODAN, Kte Creator, MOTHER FLUX, the NOIRKESTRA, Anthony Mills, and special guests!!!

830pm TRIO_NOIR - (A mix of jazz, funk, flamenco, dub, etc. John Madera sitting in on bass.)
10pm MOTHER FLUX - (John Madera's rock band -- originals)
11pm NOIRKESTRA - (John describes it as "Miles Davis funk sludge meets Led Zeppelin's whole lotta lovin'.")

JR.SKA - spinning all night between acts

-- Also, John performed acoustic songs and poetry throughout --- So, it proved to be quite a varied and fun evening. The jolly bevy of folks who braved the storm outside to come down truly enjoyed  the whole show.

I played guitar with NOIRKESTRA at the BARED SOLES dance party on the pier at the Hudson River, on Saturday afternoon, August 14, 2004.

If you're ever feeling down, I highly recommend a dance party with the BARED SOLES folks to cheer you up! If not, and if you missed this one, you should have come anyway to feel even better and enjoy the cooler air with the balmy breeze on the water while we partied down! See the pix on the photographs page.

Benoir (bass, musical direction)
Sylvia Mincewicz (electric violin)

Jodan (sitar/percussion)

Utilizing psychedelia, post-avant electronica, and a melange of New York improvisers, Benoir has  transported the listener to the 22nd Century with a debut album by the NOIRKESTRA. Think Sun-Ra, Led Zep, Bitches Brew, Ornette, Zorn, Mahavishnu, Santana, Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Pink Floyd, and Steve Reich jamming with the Band of Gypsies (in space) at a cyber-erotic interstellar rave!!!
