I had the privilege of meeting Tish Ciravolo the founder / owner September, 2005 at a Rockrgrl conference in Seattle. Much to my delight, Daisy Rock later invited me to let them sponsor me -- for me to endorse their guitars. I'm so thrilled. When I'd bought my first electric guitar as a teenager some years ago, I didn't really know of any females playing hard edged Hendrixy electric guitar -- or really any electric guitar at all. I was so self conscious. I felt like I was being so intensely scrutinized as a guitarist that even I, the gutsiest person I knew, succumbed to the pressure and actually dropped guitar for a while. It is so meaningful for me now to be able to support them and to have them support me as we encourage more women and girls to join those groovy guys out there making great music. / Shosh
ROLLING STONE MAGAZINE, Sept. 8, 2005: Jack White of White Stripes, in response to a loaded question about Meg White's style of drumming -- "It's kind of funny: When people critique hip-hop, they're scared to open up, for fear of being called racist. But they're not scared to open up on female musicians, out of pure sexism."
It's surprising and sad how much bias is still out there, even in supposedly hip places. However, there is some awareness and improvement too -- and I feel that the best thing we can do is to simply ignore the negativity as much as possible and just keep creating and playing music. Eventually, people will stop seeing us as "female musicians" and simply listen to our music. For now, we do still need the extra encouragement, to counteract the bias, by great positive thinking organizations like Daisy Rock.
